Construction Update: October 12
October 12, 2009
The Grange Project is now substantially complete. A few
landscaping and minor concrete repair items remain
on the list and will be completed soon.
The traffic signals will be set to flash for a few days this week to acclimate motorists. The signals will be set to cycle normally by this weekend.
The Department of Public Works wishes to sincerely thank area residents and motorists for their patience during the construction of this fine improvement. The lessons learned during the construction of our bioretention swales will influence other similar projects well into the future and most importantly there were no injuries to any construction personnel during the entire project.
Good Job to All!

The Grange Avenue Project is nearly complete. The
street lighting and traffic signals are now installed
and we are waiting for WE Energies to energize of the
circuits.
Construction barrels will remain in place for a few more days as a some landscaping and lighting adjustment work needs to be completed.
All access streets into the Village Center are open. Motorists are asked to remain cautious in work zones. Once the traffic signals are powered up they will be placed on red flash (stop then proceed with caution) for a period of time to acclimate drivers to the now signalized intersections at S. 60th St., S. 68th St. and Northway at Grange (west end).
Please remember that the speed limit remains at 25 MPH until the project is officially complete. The Greendale Department of Public Works extends a big "thank you" to all for their patience throughout the summer!

September 11, 2009
The Grange Avenue Project is in it's final days. The
last layer of aspalt road surface is nearly complete
with pavement marking and signage
installation to follow within a few days. All of
the landscaping is scheduled to be completed before
September 18. The new street lighting and traffic
signal systems come next with some of the poles already
in place. Please be patient, some of the street
lighting equipment is taking longer than expected to
arrive due to the huge amount of road improvement
projects underway nation wide as part of the American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Construction Update: August 31, 2009
August 31, 2009
As the project winds down over the next few weeks watch
for the landscaping to be completed and final curb,
paving and utility work to be finished. A small amount
of pavement milling at either end of the project will
be completed soon leaving the final layer of asphalt
and the installation of traffic signal structures
and street light poles the only major tasks remaining.
Please remain vigilant while traveling in the project
area.
Construction Update: August 20, 2009
August 20, 2009
The last week in August should bring the
project closer to the finish line. Look for the sod and
seed work to continue. The final storm sewer and
median curb work will also commence soon.
Northway from Bentwood Ln. to W. Grange Ave. will remain closed to traffic while the reshaping work continues on the medians.
It is likely that the project will wrap up in mid-September as long as the weather continues to cooperate.
Thanks for all of your continued patience through this project!

Construction Update: June 29, 2009
June 29, 2009
Traffic has now been switched to the newly paved
westbound lanes. Storm sewer improvements continue in
the closed eastbound lanes as well as the filling of
the bio-retention swales with the various layers of
engineered filter media. Weather permitting we will see
the milling of all eastbound pavement begin next week
in preparation of the pavement fracturing process. The
west intersection of Northway at Grange Ave. will close
to traffic for several weeks sometime after July
5th to re-shape the turn lanes. The contractor will do
everything possible to minimize disruptions and
inconvenience. As always ... please be extra alert
while traveling in work zones.
Construction Update: June 22, 2009
June 22, 2009
Work continues on the westbound lanes in anticipation
of the changeover of traffic from the eastbound lanes
sometime this week. One of the Stormceptor devices is
already installed and the other is nearly complete.
Further excavation in the bio- retention areas is
underway.
Please watch for workers and construction equipment moving around in the work zone. Please remember that road construction can cause delays and dusty conditions. Always be extra alert in work areas.

All pavement in the eastbound lanes has been fractured
and the binder layer of asphalt is installed. The
"StormCeptor" devices that will clean stormwater on the
west end of the project will be installed soon. Work is
continuing on the bio-retention areas and storm sewer
improvements. The project is right on schedule despite
the cool, wet weather and again we remind
motorists to be extra alert while driving in active
construction areas.
Construction Update: June 5, 2009
June 05, 2009
The milling process that creates the proper slope on
the pavement is now complete. The rubblizing of the
closed westbound lanes will be completed soon. The new
asphalt base coat will be applied beginning next week
after a series of proof rollings to assess the
integrity of the new road base. The new
street lighting portion of the project continues to
move forward with nearly all of the concrete pole
bases installed. Area residents can expect some dusty,
noisy conditions for a few days during this phase. As
always motorists are asked to obey the lowered speed
limits and be extra cautious within the project
limits.
Construction Update: May 27, 2009
May 27, 2009
The bio-retention swales included in the 2009 W. Grange
Ave. reconstruction project are the first of their kind
to be constructed in the state of Wisconsin.
This water quality improvement facet of the overall project is the result of a collaborative effort by the Village of Greendale, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District.
A portion of W. Grange Ave. adjacent to Dale Creek will be re-shaped to conduct pollutant laden storm water into the median catchments rather than flowing untreated into Dale Creek. As the stormwater flows through the bio-retention area, the water will percolate through a bed several feet deep of engineered media comprised of sand, aggregate and compost.
The now filtered water will then collect in perforated pipes underground and travel to a discharge point into Dale Creek. Bands of perennial native flowers such as daylilies, coneflowers, brown eyed susans and bee balm will be planted on the surface of the area for an aesthetically pleasing natural look. This project will help the Village of Greendale in our quest to remove pollutants from Dale Creek and to take a step forward in promoting good stewardship of our natural resources.

Construction Update: May 19, 2009
May 19, 2009
The reconstruction is now well underway. All Phase 1
storm sewer work is now complete and median lane
adjustments are underway in the north lanes.
Pulverization of the old concrete road and the
excavation of the bio-retention areas will begin soon.
Noise and occasional dusty conditions are expected
during the pulverization process, please plan
accordingly.
Much of the old street lighting has been removed and the installation of new lighting is underway. Please note that street lighting will be up and running as long as possible during construction. However, use extra caution when traveling within the project at night. We are moving into a very active phase of construction and we encourage you to use caution and watch for moving construction vehicles.

Construction Update: May 8, 2009
May 08, 2009
The West Grange Ave. and S. 60th St. Reconstruction
Project is now underway. Since April 22, contractors
have been placing traffic control devices, marking
pavement for removal, setting new street light duct and
building the two crossovers needed to re-route traffic
to the south lanes. The north lanes will be
reconstructed first.
Beginning the week of May 4 the storm sewer work began on the closed north lanes as well as removal of trees in areas where new turn lanes or bio-retention filters are scheduled to be installed. All other trees will be left in place. Village crews have carefully removed and transplanted ten trees form the project area and transplanted them in various parts of the Village. The Forestry Department will re-populate median trees in the fall once the project is complete. All the trees that were planned to be removed as part of the project have been removed as of this time.
Please remember to be alert to conditions within the construction zone, be aware that speed limits are reduced throughout the project and use an alternate route whenever possible. Please check back soon for further updates.
