Reverse 9-1-1 Enhances Village’s Ability to Notify Public
May 24, 2012 | 04:27 PM Posted by the Greendale Police Department
Most residents know they can call 9-1-1 to get immediate assistance in the event of an urgent police, fire or medical situation. Emergency services personnel in Greendale are now able to take that reassurance to the next level.
With its new Reverse 9-1-1 Community Telephone Notification System, the Village of Greendale can alert residents, businesses and visitors about potential emergency circumstances and rapidly notify specific geographical areas by telephone with minimal impact on emergency services personnel.
“This system enhances our ability to notify the general public of emergency situations and the evacuation procedures currently listed in the Village’s emergency plan,” said Village Manager Todd Michaels.
How does Reverse 9-1-1 work?
In the event of an emergency, the Greendale Police can identify the affected area and record a message that describes the situation and recommends the protective actions residents should take. The Reverse 9-1-1 system can automatically call all listed telephone numbers within that geographic area and deliver the recorded message. The system which is being installed by Global Connect handles 1,000 calls a minute.
“The Reverse 9-1-1 system is an immediate asset to our community,” said Manager Michaels. “This technology enables us to notify the citizens and visitors concerning hazards in their immediate area.”
The system uses existing telephones to alert citizens. There is no need for people to buy a specialized warning device. System administrators can also program additional telephone numbers into the database, allowing the addition of unlisted telephone numbers and cell phone numbers to the system.
The system can deliver text messages to TTY/TDD devices as well, which will greatly enhance the City’s ability to warn and protect citizens who are deaf or have hearing challenges.
The incorporation of the Reverse 9-1-1 system represents the Village of Greendale’s continuing commitment to providing its residents with the most advanced technologies available to ensure that our local public safety is as effective as possible.
Some of the many uses of the system include:

Greendale Police to Mobilize for Click It or Ticket Safety Belt Enforcement from May 21 to June 3
May 04, 2012 | 09:47 AM Posted by the Greendale Police Department
The Greendale Police Department will intensify its enforcement of Wisconsin’s mandatory safety belt law during the annual Click It or Ticket mobilization from May 21 to June 3. Approximately 400 law enforcement agencies throughout the state are expected to participate in this year’s Click It or Ticket mobilization, according to Chief Robert Malasuk.
“Traffic deaths in Wisconsin so far this year have increased compared with the same time last year. And in all too many recent fatal crashes, the drivers and passengers were ejected from their vehicle because they were not buckled up. That’s why we’re serious about safety belt enforcement,” said Chief Malasuk.
“To save lives and prevent injuries, our officers will stop a vehicle and issue tickets whenever they see an unbuckled driver or passenger. Our goal during Click It or Ticket and throughout the year is not to write more tickets. Through enforcement and education, we’re trying to convince everyone to buckle up voluntarily so that eventually we can reduce the number of preventable traffic deaths to zero in Wisconsin. But if voluntary compliance fails and people ignore the law as well as common sense, we will provide a very convincing reminder about wearing their safety belts.”
Law enforcement agencies throughout the state are cracking down on unbelted motorists. Last year, there were nearly 85,000 convictions for failure to fasten safety belts. Among all traffic violations, safety belt convictions in Wisconsin were second only to speeding convictions, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
Chief Malasuk advises, “If you want to avoid the delay and hassle of being stopped and ticketed by an officer, you must buckle up every trip, every time. Even more important, consistent safety belt use will protect you from being ejected from a vehicle during a crash or thrown around violently inside it and possibly hitting another person in the vehicle with massive force. There really is no rational reason to not buckle up.”
